This study explores the prevalence and coping strategies of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) among healthcare workers in Douala, Cameroon. Conducted by Basil Kum Meh, Joy Nji Neh, Franklin Chu Buh, and Orélien Sylvain MtopiI Bopda, the research highlights significant findings that can inform better workplace practices and health policies.
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) pose major challenges among healthcare workers, particularly nurses and laboratory technicians. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and coping strategies for WRMSDs in three hospitals in Douala, Cameroon.
Background: WRMSDs are conditions influenced by the work environment, often resulting in long-term disability and job abandonment. This study was conducted due to insufficient data on WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala.
Objective: To determine the prevalence, associated risk factors, and coping strategies of WRMSDs among nurses and laboratory technicians in selected hospitals in Douala.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to April 2023 in three hospitals. Data were collected using structured and Nordic questionnaires, with analysis performed using SPSS.
Results: The study found a high prevalence of WRMSDs among healthcare workers, with the lower back, neck, and upper back being the most affected regions. Key risk factors included prolonged sitting and repetitive tasks. Effective coping strategies included regular exercise, seeking professional help, and ergonomic practices.
Conclusion: The prevalence of WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala is high, necessitating urgent interventions to improve workplace ergonomics and health policies.
